Biography and Filmography:
Ahmed Rashwan is an Egyptian film director, screenplay writer, and a film producer. His filmography includes a list of short, documentaries, and one long-feature film. Since his graduation from the Cairo Film Institute in 1994, he worked on promoting the Independent Cinema wave in Egypt, as an alternative path to overcome the sway of the mass marketed film production.
Rashwan worked as an executive producer and director for many documentaries
produced exclusively for Al-Jazeera ( Al-Jazeera TV Channel).
Those movies were financed through Hot Spot Films (A Film Production Company
based in Dubai-UAE). He also worked as an executive producer for several productions, financed by Arab and American film production companies.
In 2002, Rashwan co-authored a book about Arab Independent Cinema Within the activities of Ismailia International Film Festival.
2008 witnessed the accomplishment of his first long-feature film “Basra”. The world premier was in October 2008 (Mostra de Valencia Film Festival). “Basra” won the Best Cinematography Award from Mostra de Valencia Film Festival, then Best Arab Screenplay Award from Cairo International Film Festival November 2009, Best Director (for first Film) and 3rd production award in 15th National Film Festival – Cairo April 2009, and Best Actor ( Bassem Samra) in Arab Film Festival –Rotterdam June 2009.
Left to mention that Ahmed Rashwan was selected as a Jury Member in 7 film festivals for short and documentaries. In 2004, he participated, through the U.S. Department of State, in The International Visitors Program to present the Independent Arab Cinema for American film professionals and the American public as well.
